The city of Salisbury is located in Rowan County, North Carolina. The city’s roots date back to its founding in 1753, when it was originally named Charlotte Town in honor of Queen Charlotte of MecklenburgStrelitz. The city was a hub for ScotchIrish and German immigrants, who were attracted to the area by its fertile soils and moderate climate.
In 1766, the name of the city was changed to Salisbury in honor of British Prime Minister Lord Salisbury. The city grew rapidly in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, due in part to the construction of the CharlotteSalisburyFayetteville Road, which ran through the city. Salisbury became a boomtown, with a number of factories and mills opening up in the city.
