History of Salford
Salford can trace its origins back to the Roman period, when it was part of the Brigantian tribe’s territory. The Roman road from Manchester to Carlisle ran through the area, and there was a ford across the River Irwell where the road crossed the river. This ford gave the settlement its name – ‘salford’ means ‘ford by the willow trees’.
The settlement grew in the centuries after the Romans left Britain, and by the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 it was large enough to be recorded as a ‘manor’. The manor was owned by a Norman knight, Hugh de Italianet, and had a church, a mill and around sixty households. In the centuries that followed, Salford remained a relatively small and rural settlement.
The industrial revolution changed all that. The arrival of the railways in the 19th century transformed Salford into a major industrial city. Its location – just across the River Irwell from Manchester – made it an ideal place for factories and mills. Soon Salford was home to a huge range of industries, from textile mills and engineering works to chemical plants and shipyards.
The population of Salford grew rapidly, from around 4,000 in 1800 to over 200,000 by the early 1900s. This growth brought problems as well as opportunities, and the overcrowded and unsanitary conditions in the city’s slums were a major concern. In 1844, Friedrich Engels – who would later collaborate with Karl Marx on The Communist Manifesto – visited Salford and was shocked by what he saw.
The 20th century saw further changes in Salford. The city was heavily bombed during the Second World War, and in the postwar years many of its traditional industries went into decline. In the 21st century, Salford is undergoing a regeneration process, with the construction of new housing, office and leisure developments.
