History of Salem (Ohio)
Salem, Ohio, is a city in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,303 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Columbiana County. Salem is located at the southern end of the Mahoning Valley, just west of the Pennsylvania state line in northeastern Ohio.
The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans of the Abenaki tribe. The first white settlers arrived in the late 18th century. Salem was founded in 1802 and named after Salem, Massachusetts.
The town was laid out by Colonel Salem Phelps in May 1803. Phelps owned the first gristmill and sawmill in town. Salem became the county seat in 1805. The first courthouse was built in 1806.

The Salem Witch Trials began in 1692 in Salem Village, now known as Danvers, Massachusetts. The trials resulted in the executions of 20 people, 19 of whom were convicted of witchcraft. One man was pressed to death.
The trials began in February 1692, when nineyearold Elizabeth Parris and elevenyearold Abigail Williams, the daughter and niece of Reverend Samuel Parris, began having fits. They claimed to be afflicted by the specters of some of the village women.
Dr. William Griggs diagnosed the girls as bewitched. The girls then accused three women of afflicting them: Tituba, the Parris’s Caribbean slave; Sarah Good, a homeless beggar; and Sarah Osborne, an elderly sick woman. Osborne died in jail before she could stand trial.
On June 10, 1692, a special Court of Oyer and Terminer was convened to hear the cases. The court convicted and sentenced Good and Osborne to hang. Tituba was also convicted, but her sentence was later commuted to life in prison.
