History of Salem (Missouri)
Salem is a city in Dent County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,126 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dent County. Salem is part of the Rolla, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The first settlers in the area were from Kentucky and Tennessee. They arrived in the early 1800s. The area was known as “Bellview” for a time. A post office was established in 1851 and the town was renamed “Salem” after the biblical city.

The Civil War affected Salem, as it did most of Missouri. The town was occupied by Union troops in 1861 and 1862. There was a skirmish just north of town on August 28, 1862, between the Union troops and Confederate bushwhackers. The Union troops burned several homes and businesses in the town before departing.
Following the war, the town slowly rebuilt. The Salem Iron Furnace, located just north of town, operated from 1873 to 1881, providing employment for many local residents.
The St. Louis and San Francisco Railway (commonly known as the “Frisco”) built a line through Salem in the late 1870s, providing a boost to the local economy.
Salem enjoyed a period of prosperity in the early 1900s. Oil was discovered in the vicinity in 1908, and the Salem Light and Power Company was established in 1909.
