History of Saint Paul
Saint Paul is the capital city of the state of Minnesota in the United States. The city lies on the north bank of the Mississippi River in the southeastern part of the state. It is the secondmost populous city in the state after Minneapolis and is the seat of Ramsey County. The 2016 census estimated the city’s population at 308,096, making it the 63rdlargest city in the United States and the eighthlargest city in the Midwest.
Saint Paul was founded near historic Native American settlements as a trading and transportation center on the Mississippi River. The city rose to prominence when it was named the capital of the Minnesota Territory in 1849. After Minnesota became a state in 1858, Saint Paul became the state’s capital. In 1867, the city’s name was shortened to St. Paul.
