History of Saint Charles

In the early 1600s, the first Europeans began to settle in presentday Missouri. The region was originally inhabited by the native Missouria tribe, who had settled along the Missouri River in small villages. In 1673, French explorer Louis Jolliet and Jesuit missionary Father Jacques Marquette traveled down the river and found the Missouria village of Chicasa. They named the river and the region after the tribe. The French soon began to establish trading posts and Catholic missions in the area.
