History of Saint Augustine

Saint Augustine is a city in the Southeastern United States, on the Atlantic coast of northeastern Florida. Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers, it is the oldest continuously occupied Europeanestablished settlement within the borders of the continental United States.

The city’s strategic location, sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, has made it a prized possession of conquerors ranging from the French and Spanish to the British and Americans. Saint Augustine has served as Florida’s capital city at three different times: under the Spanish (1565–1763), under British rule (1763–1784), and as the territorial capital of Florida (1824–1845).

It was designated as the county seat of St. Johns County when Florida was admitted as a state in 1845. Fortytwo years later, Davis Islands were developed off the coast of the city, which greatly expanded its land area and population.

The close proximity of Saint Augustine to the nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine, gives the city its name. The two cities are part of the urban cores of the Jacksonville metropolitan area.
