History of Sacramento
Sacramento, located at the confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers, is the capital city of the U.S. state of California and the seat of Sacramento County. It’s also the sixthlargest city in California, with a population of 475,000. Sacramento has been the capital of California since 1879, when the state legislature moved it from the city of Benicia.
The history of the city of Sacramento begins with its founding by Swiss immigrant John Sutter in 1839. Sutter had migrated to California from New York, where he had first settled in 1834. A pioneer and Sacramento’s first permanent resident, Sutter built his fort (later known as “Sutter’s Fort”) on the present site of the California State Capitol.
Sutter’s sawmill was the first in California, and it was here that gold was discovered in 1848 by James W. Marshall, leading to the California Gold Rush. Sacramento soon became a booming metropolis, as fortune seekers from all over the world flooded into the city. However, the gold rush proved to be shortlived, and by the 1860s, Sacramento’s population had decreased and its economy had declined.
The city underwent a period of revitalization in the 1870s, due in part to the construction of the transcontinental railroad, of which Sacramento was the western terminus. In 1879, the state legislature moved the state capital from the city of Benicia to Sacramento. The city’s population grew rapidly in the following years, reaching nearly 37,000 by 1900.
