History of Saco

Saco is a city in York County, Maine, United States. The population was 18,482 at the 2010 census. It is home to Ferry Beach State Park, Funtown Splashtown USA, Thornton Academy, as well as General Dynamics Armament Systems.

Saco was first incorporated as a town in 1762 and named after the ancient Saco River which travels through it. The word “saco” means “landing place” in the Abenaki language, and refers to the falls in the river where the early settlers first arrived.

The town originally included all of presentday Saco, Biddeford, and part of Old Orchard Beach. Ferries were established to cross the Saco River and connect the town with other settlements on the east bank, including Portland and Falmouth. The first bridge across the river was built in 1802.

Saco became a city in 1867 and soon developed into a thriving industrial center. The Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad ran through the city, bringing with it an influx of new residents and businesses. Among the industries that flourished in Saco during this time were textiles, papermaking, and shoemanufacturing.

The city continued to grow in the 20th century, with the construction of several bridges across the Saco River and the arrival of new industries. The Army Air Base, later the Pease Air National Guard Base, was built in the 1940s and brought with it a significant population increase. Today, Saco is a vibrant community with a rich history and a bright future.
