History of Rye
Rye is a small town in East Sussex, England. Rye is built on a chalk hill above the river Rother and is protected by the Romney Marsh to the south and east. The town has a long history dating back to the time of the Romans.
The first known settlement at Rye was a Roman fort built in the 1st century AD. The name of the town comes from the Old English word for ‘river’, which is ‘rye’. The town was an important port in medieval times and was even granted the status of a ‘Cinque Port’ in 1250. This meant that Rye was responsible for providing ships and men for the King’s navy.
During the 14th century, the town was raided by the French and was even burned down. However, it was soon rebuilt and became an important centre for smuggling. This was because Rye was outside of the jurisdiction of the Cinque Ports and so it was not subject to the same taxes.
Smuggling remained an important part of Rye’s economy until the 19th century when the trade began to decline. Today, Rye is a popular tourist destination with its medieval buildings and picturesque setting.
