History of Ruston
In the early 1840s, a Scotsman named George Francis Train came to the United States. He traveled around the country and eventually settled in Boston, where he made his fortune in the shipping industry. In 1866, Train decided to buy land in northern Louisiana. He eventually bought about 5,000 acres (2,000 ha) of land in an area that would become Ruston.
Train originally wanted to name the town “Train’s Station”, but the local postmaster convinced him to change it to Ruston, after his hometown in Scotland. The first trains arrived in Ruston in 1868, and the town was officially incorporated in 1883.
In the early 1900s, Ruston became known as the “Hub City” because of the many railroads that converged there. The city was also home to Louisiana Tech University, which was founded in 1894.
The economy of Ruston was largely based on agriculture and timber until the 1950s, when the town began to experience a manufacturing boom. Today, Ruston is known for its many manufacturing plants, as well as its outdoor recreation and cultural attractions.
