History of Roseburg
Roseburg is a city located in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 21,181. It is the county seat of Douglas County and is located on the I5 freeway approximately halfway between Portland and Sacramento. The city is also home to the Roseburg VA Medical Center, a Veterans Affairs hospital.
Roseburg was founded in 1874 by Aaron Rose, who came to the area from nearby Deer Creek. He filed a land claim for 640 acres (2.6 km2) of land that included what is now downtown Roseburg. Rose then built a grist mill, sawmill, and a general store. With the completion of the Oregon and California Railroad in 1887, Roseburg became an important lumber town. The city was incorporated in 1893.
The city’s economy was originally based on timber, but has diversified in recent years. The Umpqua River provides recreation and power for the city, as well as serving as a transportation route for timber and other products.
