History of Rome (Georgia)
Rome, Georgia is a city located in the northwestern part of the state, about 70 miles northwest of Atlanta. The city is the county seat of Floyd County and has a population of about 37,000. Rome is perhaps best known for being the home of Berry College, a private liberal arts college.
The land on which Rome stands was once part of Cherokee territory. In 1834, the Cherokee were forced to cede their land to the United States government as part of the Treaty of New Echota. The Cherokee were then relocated to Indian Territory (presentday Oklahoma).
White settlers began moving into the area in the early 1830s. The city of Rome was officially founded in 1834 and named after the city in Italy. It quickly became a regional center for commerce and education.
