Rolla is a city in Phelps County, Missouri, United States. The population was 19,559 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Phelps County. Rolla is located approximately midway between St. Louis and Springfield along I44. The Rolla MoDOT Travel Center serves as a rest area for travelers on I44. Rolla is the home of the Missouri University of Science and Technology, founded in 1870 as the first public school of engineering west of the Mississippi River.
Rolla is also home to Ozark Technical Community College.
The Phelps County Courthouse, Rolla Public Schools, and Missouri S&T’s CarverTurner Building are all on the National Register of Historic Places.
The city name comes from early settlers who named it for a spring that provided water to power a gristmill. “Rolla Lott” (1783–1849), an early settler, gave the city its name.

History of Rolla
Rolla was first settled in the late 1830s by pioneers moving west from Virginia and Kentucky. It was named after Dr. Rolla Hays, a prominent citizen of St. Louis. The city was officially incorporated in 1858.
The early years of Rolla were shaped by the Civil War. The city was proUnion and served as a center of operations for the Union army in Missouri. In 1861, the first Missouri State Guard camp was established in Rolla, and in 1862, the city became the site of a major Union hospital.
After the war, Rolla experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The MissouriPacific Railroad came to town in 1874, and the University of MissouriRolla (now Missouri S&T) was founded in 1873.
In the early 20th century, Rolla became known as the “Gateway to the Ozarks” due to its location on the newly constructed Ozark Scenic Highway (now Route 66). The highway brought an influx of tourists to the area, and many of them decided to stay.
Today, Rolla is a thriving city with a diverse economy. The University of MissouriRolla is a major employer, and the city is also home to a variety of manufacturing and service businesses.
