History of Rockville
Rockville, Connecticut is a town in Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 5,014 at the 2010 census. It is home to the corporate headquarters of several major insurance companies and was formerly home to the headquarters of First Brands Corporation (the makers of Absorbine Jr. and other household products). Rockville is also the site of an annual Guinness World Record Day event which attracts international media attention.
The settlement of Rockville began in 1684 when Edward Griswold, grandson of the famous Puritan minister John Cotton, bought a tract of land along the Quaddick Brook from the local Native Americans. The first European settlers were attracted to the area by its abundant natural resources and good hunting and fishing. By 1713, a sawmill and gristmill had been built and the first schoolhouse was erected in 1716.
The town was incorporated in 1800 and named for its rocky terrain. By the mid19th century, Rockville had become a thriving manufacturing center, producing textiles, brass goods, and other products. The arrival of the railroad in 1849 expanded the town’s economic opportunities even further.
The first half of the 20th century was a period of growth and prosperity for Rockville. New industries moved into town and the population nearly doubled between 1900 and 1950. However, the town began to suffer from the same economic problems that affected many other small towns in New England in the second half of the century. Factories began to close and businesses moved away, leaving Rockville with a much smaller tax base.
Today, Rockville is working to revitalize its economy. The town has been successful in attracting new businesses and families, and its historic downtown area has been revitalized. Rockville is also a popular tourist destination, thanks to its scenic beauty and its proximity to Hartford, Boston, and New York City.
