Rock Island is a city located in the U.S. state of Illinois, on the Mississippi River. As of the 2010 census, the city was the county seat of Rock Island County and had a population of 39,018. The metropolitan area has a population of 203,201. Rock Island is one of the Quad Cities, along with neighboring Moline, East Moline, and the Iowa cities of Davenport and Bettendorf. The Quad Cities have an estimated population of 381,342. The city is home to Rock Island Arsenal, the largest governmentowned weapons manufacturing facility in the Western Hemisphere.

The island has been home to humans for over 12,000 years. It was founded by French explorers in 1673 as a military post and remained under their control until 1763 when it was ceded to the British after the French and Indian War. The British used the island as a fortification and trading post until the early 19th century when the American Indians living there were forcibly relocated to make way for American settlement.

The city’s name is derived from the Rock Island who were the original inhabitants of the island. The island is now home to a number of attractions including the Rock Island Centennial Bridge, Rock Island Arsenal Museum, John Deere Pavilion, and the Quad City Botanical Center. History of Rock Island

The first settlers in the Rock Island area were Native Americans who lived in camps along the river. The Rock Island Rapids, which were located just south of the presentday city, were a major barrier to navigation on the Mississippi River. The rapids were eventually discovered by French explorers in the early 1600s, and a fort was built nearby in 1680. The French named the island “Isle de Roches” (Island of Rocks).

In 1803, the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, which included the Rock Island area. The island was assigned to the Illinois Territory in 1809. In 1816, the first steamboat arrived at Rock Island, and a ferry service was established to transport passengers and freight across the river to Iowa.

In 1824, the first bridge was built across the Mississippi River at Rock Island, and the following year a post office was established. The island was incorporated as a city in 1837. The first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River was built at Rock Island in 1856. The bridge was an important link in the transportation system of the country and helped to make Rock Island a major transportation hub.
