History of Roanoke
The history of Roanoke, Virginia, as an English settlement goes back to 1584, when Sir Walter Raleigh sent Richard Grenville to establish a colony on Roanoke Island. It was the first English attempt at colonizing the area now known as North Carolina. The Roanoke colony failed soon after it was established, and the fate of its inhabitants remains a mystery to this day.
In 1585, a second group of English settlers arrived on Roanoke Island, led by Ralph Lane. This group also failed to establish a lasting settlement, and returned to England after only a year. Following the failure of the Roanoke colonies, no further English attempts at settlement were made in the area for over a decade.
In 1606, the Virginia Company was chartered by King James I with the goal of establishing permanent settlements in Virginia. The Virginia Company’s first settlement attempt was the Jamestown colony, established in 1607. Jamestown was successful, and is now the site of the state capital, Richmond.
The Virginia Company continued to try and establish settlements in the Roanoke area, and in 1609 they sent a group of around 100 settlers, led by John Smith. This group managed to survive and even thrive, but relations with the local Native Americans quickly deteriorated. In 1622, a group of Native Americans staged a surprise attack on the English settlers in Virginia, killing over three hundred people. This event, known as the Jamestown Massacre, signaled the start of the First AngloPowhatan War.
The conflict lasted until 1632, when a peace treaty was signed between the English and the Powhatan Confederacy. The treaty granted the English settlers land west of the Rappahannock River, which included the area now known as Roanoke.
Settlers began moving to the Roanoke area in 1634, and a formal town was established in 1640. It was originally known as Big Lick, named for a large salt deposit located near the town. In 1852, the name was changed to Roanoke, and it officially became a city in 1874.
