In 1869, Frank Lloyd Wright and his family moved to River Forest from Wisconsin. Wright built the first of his “Prairie Houses” in River Forest, and the village has several historic Wrightdesigned buildings. Other notable architecture in the village includes work by William Le Baron Jenney, Lawrence Buck, and Howard Van Doren Shaw.

The village has a Metra station on the Union Pacific/West line, which provides direct service to Chicago’s financial district. It is also served by Pace buses.

The River Forest Public Library is a member of the Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS).

The River Forest Park District operates eleven parks, including Priory Park, Centennial Park, and Roosevelt Park. The park district also manages the River Forest Tennis Center and the River Forest Golf Club.
