History of Ripon

Ripon, Wisconsin is a city located in Fond du Lac County. The city has a population of 7,733 as of the 2010 census. Ripon is the county seat of Fond du Lac County. The city is located on the Fox River, approximately 30 miles (48 km) south of Green Bay and 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Milwaukee.

The area that is now Ripon was first settled by Abraham Vore, a Dutchman, who built a cabin on the banks of the Fox River in 1818. In 1836, Ripon was officially founded as a city by Alvan Earll, who named the city after Ripon, England. The city became the county seat in 1844.

Ripon was an active participant in the Underground Railroad, helping slaves escape to freedom in the north. The first public school in Ripon was built in 1853. The Ripon College, a liberal arts college, was founded in 1851. The Women’s suffrage movement was started in Ripon in 1854 by Angelina Grimke.

In 1858, Ripon was the site of the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society Fair, which was the first state fair in Wisconsin. The fair was held annually in Ripon until 1866, when it was moved to Madison.

The American Civil War began in 1861, and Ripon was home to Camp Lawton, a training camp for Union soldiers. In 1864, Ripon was the site of a convention of the National Union Party, which nominated Abraham Lincoln for reelection.
