The town of Rickmansworth is located in southwest Hertfordshire, England within the London commuter belt. The town is situated on the River Colne 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Charing Cross and is within the MK39 postcode area. Rickmansworth is twinned with the German town of Waldeck.
The first recorded mention of Rickmansworth is from the 10th century when land in the area was granted to Westminster Abbey by King Edgar. The name ‘Rickmansworth’ is thought to mean ‘land of the strong man’, derived from the Old English personal name Rica and worth, a homestead or enclosure.
In the Domesday Book of 1086, Rickmansworth is listed as Rectime worth with a population of 37 households. The manor was held by Westminster Abbey from King Edward the Confessor and later passed to William the Conqueror. By 1155 the manor had been subdivided between Hugolinus de Rikemanesworth and Richard de Cornuti villa (Richard of the Horn).
During the medieval period, Rickmansworth was a small farming village with a weekly market and annual Fair. The Fair and market were discontinued in 1539 as a result of the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII. In 1609, Sir Edward Zouch of Wotton House obtained a charter for a weekly market and an annual threeday Fair from King James I. The market is still held today.
