History of Reigate

The first record of Reigate is from, when King William I gave the manor to one of his followers, William de Warenne.

During the Norman period, Reigate was a small market town, and because of its proximity to the Royal Palace at Windsor, it grew steadily throughout the Medieval period. During the reign of Charles II, Reigate became a fashionable spa town, and many of the large Georgian houses in the town centre date from this time.

By the early 19th century, Reigate had established itself as a prosperous market town, with a number ofmerchantile, manufacturing and professional families living in the town. However, the coming of the railways in the mid19th century led to a decline in Reigate’s importance, as London became increasingly accessible and trade shifted away from the town.

Reigate revived in the early 20th century as a commuter town for London, and began to expand rapidly with the development of new residential areas such as Merstham and Redhill. The influx of Londoners led to a boom in the construction industry, and Reigate’s population more than doubled between 1901 and 1931.

The Second World War brought further changes to Reigate, as the town was used as a base for American troops stationed in England. After the war, Reigate continued to grow as a commuter town, and is now a thriving market town with a vibrant economy.
