History of Redwood City

Redwood City is a city located in San Mateo County in the Bay Area of California, United States, approximately 27 miles (43 km) south of San Francisco, and 24 mi (39 km) northwest of San Jose. The 2010 census reported a population of 76,815. The city is the headquarters of several technology companies such as Oracle and Electronic Arts. Furthermore, numerous startups have been founded in Redwood City, including video games developer Roblox and tracker company Fitbit.

The Port of Redwood City is the only deepwater port on San Francisco Bay south of San Francisco. It has been a valuable commercial center since the 1850s. It was proclaimed a city in 1867.

During World War II, the city became a major staging area for the US military as troops were shipped off to the Pacific Theater.

The city has a historic downtown that has been revitalized in recent years with the addition of new restaurants and shops.
