History of Redruth
Redruth is a town in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The population of Redruth was 14,018 at the 2011 census.
The town is situated between Carn Brea on the hill to the west and the noweventsless Portreath Downs which have been earmarked for mining since the Elizabethan era to the east.
The name is conditioned by the Cornish dialect and by association with Saint Ruth. In the Cornish language, Redruth is called Ryddyrth.
The spelling “Ruthruth” is sometimes found, but is incorrect; the double appears to have arisen by folk etymology due to the prevalence of the obsolete word writhe, meaning “to twist”.
Redruth was a small market town until the early 19th century when its copper mines, Whealaroo, Wheal Cruly and others, brought a rapid expansion. The mining boom brought skilled miners from all over Cornwall and Devon and a series of rowdy events were common.
By 1842, nine Anglican churches had been built in the town and it became Cornwall’s largest town and one of the largest in the UK.
The advent of steam propulsion led to the growth of Portreath harbour as a coalshipping port and Redruth railway station opened on the main line from London Paddington in 1846.
