Red Cloud is a city in Webster County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,025 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Webster County. The city is named for the 1870s Lakota Sioux chief Red Cloud.
The city is considered the “capital” of the Sioux Nation.
It is home to the nations only all Native American hospital, the Santee Sioux Nation Human Services Center.
In addition to the hospital, the city is home to the Sioux Nation Medical Clinic, the US Indian Health Service, the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
The city has a multicultural heritage with a large Native American influence.
The annual Red Cloud Indian Summer Celebration attracts over 4,000 visitors each August. The twoday event features a powwow, an Indian market, food, and entertainment.

History of Red Cloud
Red Cloud is a city in Webster County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,020 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Webster County. The city is named after a 19thcentury Native American chief.
The area now known as Red Cloud was first settled by European Americans in 1871, when the Union Pacific Railroad reached the site. The city was named after the Lakota Sioux chief Mahpiya Luta (Red Cloud), who had led his people in resistance to the US government’s attempts to build railroads through their homeland on the northern Plains. A post office was established in 1873.
In 1882, the city was designated as the county seat of newly created Webster County. The county courthouse and other county offices were built in 1883.
The city continued to grow in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Several churches and a high school were established. The population reached 1,856 in 1900 and 2,825 in 1910.
The city’s fortunes changed in 1913, when the Republican River overflowed its banks and caused extensive damage. Many businesses and homes were destroyed, and the population declined to 1,761 by 1920.
The city began to recover in the mid1920s, and the population reached 2,889 by 1930. However, the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl hit the area hard in the 1930s, and the population dropped to 2,116 in 1940. It began to rebound in the 1940s, and by 1950 it had reached 3,068.
Red Cloud has continued to grow in recent decades. The population was 3,314 in 2000.
