Sights in Rawlins
Rawlins is a city in Carbon County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 9,259 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Carbon County and is Wyoming’s eighth largest city. Rawlins is named for Union General John A. Rawlins, who established military posts here in 1867 and 1868. General Rawlins was chief of staff to General Ulysses S. Grant and later served as Secretary of War under President Grant.
The city was founded in the territorial days of Wyoming in 1868 as a construction camp on the Union Pacific Railroad. It was named Rawlins Springs for General Rawlins, and was then called Rawlins Crossing and Rawlins City before its current name was settled upon in 1897. It was a station on both the transcontinental railroad and the CheyenneBlack Hills stage route.
As the railroad pushing westward ran into the Sierra Mountains it found Rawlins to be an important junction, since the track needed to head south and then west in order to avoid the mountain range. So, in order to change direction, a large steam locomotive needed to be turned around. This process caused considerable delays and Rawlins soon became known as “Sixteen Mile House”, a place to spend the night while the train was turned around.
Eventually, a significant rotary turntable was built in Rawlins which allowed trains to be turned without having to backtrack through town. The turntable is now on display in front of the Rawlins Union Pacific Depot which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
As the railroad continued to grow, so did Rawlins. It became the home of a large number of Union Pacific workers who maintain the tracks and equipment. The city also became an important stop on the Overland Trail which was used by many settlers headed west during the late 19th century.

Rawlins is a city in Carbon County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 9,259 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Carbon County. Rawlins is the home of the Wyoming Frontier Prison and the Wyoming State Fair.
The city was named for General John A. Rawlins, who camped in the area with Union soldiers during the American Civil War. By 1867, Rawlins had become a stagecoach and telegraph stop. The Weston County, Montana Territory, courthouse was located in Rawlins from 1870 until it was moved to Newcastle, Wyoming, in 1873.
Rawlins is located at 41°47′48″N 107°17′42″W (41.796667, 107.295000). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.87 square miles (15.19 km2), all of it land.
As of the census of 2010, there were 9,259 people, 3,444 households, and 2,135 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,578.8 inhabitants per square mile (610.7/km2). There were 3,734 housing units at an average density of 634.1 per square mile (244.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 86.0% White, 7.1% African American, 1.6% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.9% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.4% of the population.
