Sights in Ramsey
Ramsey is a town in the Isle of Man, located in the north of the island at the foot of the Ramsey Hill. It is the second largest town on the island after Douglas and has a population of around 6,000 people. The town is named after the Viking chief Hroðulf or Rǫgnvaldr Ólafsson, who established his stronghold here in the 10th century. Ramsey has been an important settlement since the early days of the island and was the site of a Benedictine Abbey, which was founded in 1098. The town has a long history of fishing and shipbuilding and was once one of the most important ports in the British Isles. Today, Ramsey is a popular tourist destination, with its picturesque harbour, sandy beaches and array of shops, cafes and restaurants. The town is also home to the Isle of Man Steam Railway, which runs from Douglas to Port Erin.
History of Ramsey
Ramsey is a small town in Huntingdonshire, England. It is situated on the River Great Ouse, 6 miles (9.7 km) northeast of Huntingdon, and had a population of 4,832 in 2011. Ramsey was once the capital of the historic and geographically vast Isle of Ely.
The town was originally known as Rameseia, and was founded by the Saxons in the 5th century. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Ramesie”. In 1086, William the Conqueror ordered that a castle be built in Ramsey to defend the strategically important Isle of Ely from rebellion.
The castle was never completed, and was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell’s troops in 1643 during the English Civil War.
The town grew steadily throughout the medieval period, and by the 15th century Ramsey was the second largest town in the Isle of Ely after Ely itself.
The town’s market charter was granted by King John in 1204, and Ramsey continued to be an important market town throughout the medieval period and into the modern era.
The town was struck by plague in 1593, 1603 and 1625, and by fire in 1607, 1610 and 1645.
In 1742, ThomasThurlow, Lord Chancellor and Bishop of Lincoln, was born in Ramsey.
The Fenland Canal reached Ramsey in 1812, and the town became an important inland port. The construction of the Great Eastern Railway in 1847 further boosted the town’s economy, and Ramsey became a prosperous market town in the 19th century.
The 20th century saw a decline in Ramsey’s fortunes, however, and the town was greatly affected by the economic downturn of the late 20th century. The closure of the railway line in 1968 dealt a severe blow to the town, from which it has only recently begun to recover.
Despite its relatively small size, Ramsey has a long and rich history dating back over 1,000 years. Today, the town is a thriving market town once again, and is a popular tourist destination in the region.
