History of Quincy (Illinois)
The city of Quincy, Illinois is located on the Mississippi River in the westcentral part of the state. It is the county seat of Adams County and is the largest city in the county. The city is part of the Quincy, IL–MO Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The area that is now Quincy was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. The Kickapoo, Illinois, and Piankeshaw tribes all had villages in the area. The first European settlers were Frenchmen who came to the area in 1804. They built a fort and a trading post near the presentday city.
The city of Quincy was founded in 1825 by John Wood, who named it after John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States. The city was incorporated in 1832.
In 1839, the city was designated as the county seat of Adams County. The city grew rapidly in the 1840s and 1850s, and its population topped 5,000 in 1855.
During the American Civil War, Quincy was a center of Union activity. The city was home to a military hospital and a prison for Confederate soldiers.
