History of Queens
Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area now known as Queens was inhabited by the Algonquianspeaking Mattabesic Indians, who fished, hunted, and farmed the land. When the Dutch settled in the area in the early 17th century, the land was eventually divided into four provinces: Brooklyn, Westchester, Queens, and Nassau. In 1683, Queens County was established as one of the original 12 counties of New York.
The county seat was at Jamaica, and the largest settlement was at Flushing. In 1785, during the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of Kemp’s Landing was fought in what is now Queens. In 1858, the City of Brooklyn and the Town of North Hempstead were consolidated into the City and County of Brooklyn, and in 1898 the remainder of Queens County was consolidated with New York City to form the five boroughs.
The borough of Queens was established in 1898 when the three eastern townships of Queens County, Newtown, Flushing, and Jamaica, were consolidated into a single borough. The borough was named for the larger of the three townships, which was named for Queen Catherine of Braganza, the Portuguese wife of England’s King Charles II. Flushing, however, was the site of the first European settlement in Queens.
In 1645, the Dutch West India Company purchased the land that is now northern Queens from the Mohawk nation. Two years later, a group of English settlers established the first town in Queens, at Vlissingen (now Flushing). The English were soon joined by other settlers from the Netherlands, Germany, and France. The town quickly grew to include farms, stores, taverns, a windmill, and a church.
In 1664, the English took control of the colony from the Dutch, and Queens became part of the New York Colony. During the American Revolution, Queens sided with the Patriots, and several battles were fought in the borough, including the Battle of Long Island in 1776.
After the war, Queens continued to grow. It became the home of some of the country’s earliest universities and colleges, including St. John’s College (now St. John’s University) and Queens College. It also became the site of the New York City Airport, now JFK International Airport.
Today, Queens is one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the United States. It is home to nearly 2.3 million people, and its population includes people from more than 100 different countries.
