The village of PutinBay is a popular tourist destination located on South Bass Island in Ohio. PutinBay is a village located on South Bass Island in PutinBay Township, Ottawa County, Ohio, United States. The population was 138 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ottawa County. The village is a popular summer resort and recreational destination. The PutinBay Township park district operates several public parks and beaches on the island including a public swimming pool, an 18hole public golf course, a state nature preserve, and Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, a National Historic Landmark commemorating the Battle of Lake Erie. Ferry boats transport visitors to the island from the Miller Ferry dock on the mainland in Catawba Point, Port Clinton.
The village is home to several museums including the Ohio Historical Society’s Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial Visitor Center and Museum, the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society Museum, and the Aquatic Visitors Center. Other attractions include the Butterfly House, the oldest puttputt golf course in America, and the Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center which includes a trio of caves, a war memorial, and a butterfly garden. History of Put-in-Bay
PutinBay, Ohio is a village located on South Bass Island in Lake Erie. The island is part of the Bass Islands and is about 3 miles from the Ohio mainland. PutinBay is known for its many wineries, its restaurants and its outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and swimming.
The island was originally inhabited by the Erie Indians and was called Pelee by them. The name PutinBay came from the fact that the waters around the island were shallow and it was a good place to “put in” boats.
The first European to settle on the island was a Frenchman named Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. In 1763, the island was turned over to the British as part of the Treaty of Paris which ended the Seven Years’ War.
The British did not do much with the island and it was returned to the United States in 1783 as part of the Treaty of Paris which ended the American Revolutionary War.
In 1803, the island was purchased by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
During the War of 1812, the island was used as a base by the Americans to attack British ships on Lake Erie. One of the most famous battles of the war, the Battle of Lake Erie, was fought near the island.
After the war, the island remained mostly undeveloped until the middle of the 19th century when it became a popular summer resort for wealthy people from Cleveland and Toledo.
In 1866, the island was struck by a storm which destroyed most of the buildings. The island was rebuilt and became even more popular as a summer resort.
In 1903, the U.S. government built a fort on the island to protect the entrance to the harbor. The fort was named after General James A. Garfield who had been assassinated in 1881.
During World War II, the fort was used as a training ground for soldiers. After the war, the fort was abandoned and the island returned to being a summer resort.
Today, PutinBay is a popular destination for boaters, fishermen and tourists. The island is home to numerous hotels, restaurants, bars and shops. It is also the site of the annual PutinBay Music Festival which features nationally known musicians.
