History of Prineville

Prior to the founding of Prineville, the Crooked River Valley was inhabited by the Native Americans who were members of the Cowboys band of the Northern Paiute. The first white settlers in the area were drawn to the region by the discovery of gold in the early 1860s. However, it was the establishment of a cattle ranch by Peter French in 1864 that led to the city’s founding.

French, who was originally from Prineville, Oregon, established a cattle ranch on 640 acres of land near the Crooked River. He built a cabin and corral on the property, which became known as the French Prairie Ranch. In 1868, French sold the ranch to Andrew Jackson Marcy, a former soldier who had also been involved in the cattle business in California. Marcy continued to operate the ranch, and it soon became one of the largest in the area.

In 1882, the Oregon Pacific Railroad reached the Crooked River Valley, and Marcy donated a portion of his land to the railroad company for the establishment of a townsite. The railroad company laid out the streets and divided the town into blocks, and Marcy named the new town Prineville after his hometown in Oregon.

The town of Prineville quickly grew, and by 1884 it had a general store, a hotel, a saloon, and a blacksmith shop. It was incorporated as a city in 1886, and the following year it became the county seat of Crook County. The city continued to grow throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and by the mid2040s it had a population of over 2,000.

Today, Prineville is a thriving city with a population of over 10,000. It is the home of several hightech companies, and its economy is based on agriculture, forestry, and tourism. The city is also home to several historic buildings, including the Crook County Courthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
