History of Presque Isle
The city of Presque Isle is located in the northeasternmost part of the state of Maine in the United States. It lies on an isthmus of land that is surrounded by water on three sides. The city has a total area of 21.1 square miles, of which 20.7 square miles is land and 0.4 square miles is water. As of the 2010 census, the city’s population was 9,171 people. The city is the commercial center of Aroostook County and is home to the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
The first European settlers of the area were Frenchspeaking Acadians who arrived in the 17th century. The Acadians built a fort on the isthmus which they named Fort perfecto istmo, or “perfect isthmus fort.” In 1759, the British took control of the area and the fort was renamed Fort Howe. The British continued to use the fort as a base of operations during the American Revolutionary War.
In 1838, a group of Methodist missionaries established a school for the children of the local mi’kmaq First Nation. The school was known as the Aroostook Mission. In 1847, the state of Maine chartered the Aroostook Baptist Academy, which was later renamed the Northern Maine Missionary Institute. These two schools would eventually merge in 1892 to form the presentday University of Maine at Presque Isle.
