History of Preesall

Preesall is a small town and civil parish in the Wyre district of Lancashire, England. It is situated on the River Wyre, 3 miles (5 km) east of Fleetwood and 3 miles (5 km) west of PoultonleFylde. The town has a population of 5,376, making it the third largest settlement in Wyre.

Preesall was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Prisal”, meaning “the fenced enclosure”. At that time, it was part of the hundred of Amounderness and was held by Gillibrand from Earl Tostig. It consisted of three ploughlands and a wood.

In 1292, the town was granted a charter by King Edward I, making it a free borough. This gave the town the right to hold a weekly market and an annual fair. The market was held on Mondays and the fair on the festival of St Peter ad Vincula.

The town continued to grow in the 14th and 15th centuries, and by 1540 there were 70 households. In 1642, the town was besieged by Parliamentary troops during the English Civil War.

In 1760, the first school in Preesall was founded, and in 1848 the first church was built.

Preesall remained a small market town until the 19th century, when the coming of the railways led to a increase in tourism. The town became a popular seaside resort, with visitors coming to enjoy the fresh air and sea bathing.

The town’s popularity as a resort declined in the early 20th century, and it became a commuter town for Liverpool and Manchester.

Today, Preesall is a quiet town, with a mixture of old and new buildings. The Old Market Place is still the focus of the town, and the weekly market is still held there. There are a number of shops, pubs and restaurants, as well as a library and a health centre.
