History of Powell
Powell, Wyoming is a city in Park County, Wyoming, United States. The city is named after Old Fort Powell, a trading post and stagecoach stop along the Oregon Trail. The population was 6,314 at the 2010 census.
Powell was established as a town on April 24, 1904, when the Park County Land Company filed the original plat. It was named for its proximity to the site of Old Fort Powell. The fort was named for Major John Wesley Powell, who explored the Green River in 1869.
Powell originally served as a stop for stagecoaches and freight wagons along the Oregon Trail. In later years, it became an agricultural center for the production of sugar beets, wheat, and barley. The Big Horn Sugar Company built a beet processing plant in Powell in 1908. The plant closed in 1985.
Powell is home to Northwest College, a twoyear community college founded in 1951.
The city is located along US Highway 14, US Highway 16, and US Highway 20. It is about 60 miles east of Yellowstone National Park.
