Pottsville is a city in, and the county seat of, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 14,324 at the 2010 census, and is the city of the Pottsville, PA Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is the largest city in the Coal Region of Pennsylvania. The city lies along the west bank of the Schuylkill River, 52mi south by southwest of WilkesBarre. It is located in Pennsylvanias Coal Region and is home to the largestanthracite coal deposit in the world.
The discovery of coal in the early nineteenth century led to the development of the region as an industrial center. The opening of the Lehigh Canal in 1829, along with improvements in transportation made Pottsville a very prosperous city. Anthracite coal mining dominated the citys economy during the nineteenth century. Many immigrants, particularly Irish and Welsh, came to work in the mines. Pottsville was , at one point, the third largest city in Pennsylvania after Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
