Pottstown is a historic borough in Chester County, Pennsylvania, 45 miles (72 km) northwest of Philadelphia. English Quakers first settled here in 1681 on land purchased from the local Indians. Within a year, eleven more Quaker families from England joined them. By 1705, the borough’s population had reached 300. The United States Post Office Department first established a post office here in 1793. Pottstown was incorporated as a borough on August 5, 1815. Like many other early towns in Pennsylvania, it was named for its founder, John Potts. His stone home, built in 1752 and known as the Potts House, still stands on Manatawny Street. The Potts family fortune helped fund the development of iron and steel works in the community.

History of Pottstown
Pottstown, Pennsylvania is a historic town in Chester County, located about 40 miles northwest of Philadelphia. It is the county seat of Chester County and the largest borough in the county. The town is home to about 22,000 people and is known for its historic downtown and sprawling suburban neighborhoods.
Pottstown was founded in 1752 by John Potts, a ironmaster and Quaker from Berks County. Potts came to the area to take advantage of the rich deposits of iron ore and limestone. He built an iron furnace and forge on the Schuylkill River, which quickly became the center of the local iron industry. The community that grew up around the forge became known as “Pottsgrove”, and in 1761 the name was officially changed to “Pottstown”.
The town prospered during the 18th and 19th centuries due to the iron and steel industry. Pottstown was also home to a large brickworks, which supplied brick for many of the buildings in Philadelphia. The town’s economic success attracted a wave of German immigrants in the mid19th century, who established businesses and churches.
Pottstown’s downtown was severely damaged by a fire in November 1884, but was quickly rebuilt. The borough continued to grow in the 20th century, becoming a bedroom community for Philadelphia. Pottstown is now home to a diverse mix of residents, and its downtown has been revitalized in recent years.
