History of Portage
The first recorded inhabitants of the area now known as Portage were the Winnebago Indians. The name “Portage” comes from the French word portage, meaning to carry a canoe overland between waterways. The tribe occupied this area for centuries, living in small villages along the Fox River. They were a peaceful people who lived off the land, hunting and gathering the food they needed to survive.
The first European settlers to arrive in the area were French fur trappers. In the late 1600s, they established trading posts along the Fox River. The fur trade was lucrative and the French settlers prospered. However, relations between the French and the Winnebago began to deteriorate and in 1728, the Fox Wars broke out. The conflict lasted for four years and ended with the French being driven out of the area.
The British were the next Europeans to arrive in the Portage area. They too established trading posts and began to trade with the Winnebago. Relations between the British and the Native Americans were generally good and the two groups coexisted peacefully.
In 1763, the Treaty of Paris was signed, ending the Seven Years’ War. As a result of the treaty, the British ceded the Portage area to the newly formed United States of America.
The first American settlers began to arrive in the early 1800s. They came in search of fertile land to farm and soon established farms and businesses. The young town began to grow and in 1846, it was officially incorporated as the village of Portage.
The Village of Portage continued to grow and in 1856, it was chartered as a city. The city soon became a regional center for commerce and industry. In the early 1900s, the Fox River Paper Company established a mill in Portage. The mill was a major employer for many years and helped to spur the city’s growth.
Today, Portage is a thriving city of more than 10,000 people. It is a beautiful place to live and work, with a rich history and a bright future.
