The first European settlement in what is now Calhoun County was made by French settlers in the late 18th century. The first French settlement was Port Saint Louis, now known as Port Lavaca. The settlers found a good harbor on Lavaca Bay, and the area became a prosperous trading post for ranchers and farmers in the area.

In 1836, the city of Port Lavaca was founded by Dr. William Baillie Gordon. Gordon named the city after his wife, Lavaca. The city was incorporated in 1852.

During the Civil War, Port Lavaca was a major port for supplying Confederate troops. The Union Army occupied the town in 1863, and it was used as a staging area for Union troops during the remainder of the war.

In 1874, a storm surge swept over the town, causing extensive damage. The Army Corps of Engineers was called in to build a seawall to protect the town. The seawall was completed in 1886, and has been rebuilt several times since then.

In the early 20th century, the city became a major fishing center. The port was also used to ship livestock and agricultural products from the area.

During World War II, the port was used to ship troops and supplies to the war effort. The Navy also had a presence in the city, with a base and a hospital.

After the war, the port was used for commercial shipping, and the city grew rapidly. The population peaked in the 1970s, and has since declined somewhat. The city is still a major center for fishing, shipping, and tourism.
