History of Ponca City
The city of Ponca City, Oklahoma has a long and storied history. First inhabited by Native Americans, the area now known as Ponca City was first explored by Europeans in the early 1800s. A French trapper named Pierre Paquette is credited with being the first white man to set foot in presentday Ponca City.
In 1846, the United States acquired the land that is now Oklahoma in the treaty ending the MexicanAmerican War. The U.S. government then established several Native American reservations in the area, including the Ponca reservation just north of presentday Ponca City.
The first nonnative settlers to establish homes in the area were cattlemen from Texas who drove their herds north through Indian Territory in the late 1800s. These socalled “sooners” often clashed with the Native Americans who still inhabited the area.
Tensions came to a head in 1892 when the federal government decided to relocate the Ponca tribe from their reservation to a smaller piece of land in Indian Territory. The relocation was accomplished by a train known as the “Ponca Exile.” Many of the tribe members died during the journey or in the following years from exposure and disease.
The city of Ponca City was founded in 1893, just one year after the “Ponca Exile.” It was originally named “New Ponca” after the Native American tribe that had been forced out of the area. The name was later shortened to just “Ponca City.”
The early years of Ponca City were marked by a boomandbust cycle due to the city’s dependence on the oil industry. Despite this, Ponca City continued to grow and prosper. Today, it is a vibrant and thriving community with a rich history.
