History of Point Roberts
Point Roberts, Washington, is a small peninsula located just north of the 49th parallel, which is the border between the United States and Canada. The community is about 29 miles (47 km) southwest of downtown Vancouver, British Columbia. It is notable for being one of the few locations in the contiguous United States that is north of Canada. The waters of Georgia Strait and Boundary Bay surround Point Roberts. It has a land area of 5.375 square miles (13.952 km2), and a population of 1,314 as of the 2010 census.
The international boundary runs through the center of Rosario Strait, which was defined in the 1846 Oregon Treaty as the border between the United States and British North America (now Canada). Rosario Strait is large enough that, if the border had been drawn along its center, the southern tip of Point Roberts would have been Canadian territory. However, the agreement resulted in the border being drawn on the 49th parallel, making Point Roberts part of the United States.
Since the Treaty of 1846, international borders have changed several times. The 1853 Treaty of Washington demarcated the border between British North America and the United States west of the Rockies along the 49th parallel. As a result of the 1866 Treaty of Washington, the Hadesgate Island was transferred from British to American territory. In 1925, the land bridge between Point Roberts and Canada’s Tsawwassen Peninsula (part of Delta, British Columbia) was created with the filling of the lowlying Strawberry Island.
TheIGHTS
In 1792, Captain George Vancouver explored the region and realized that Point Roberts could be used to provide a back door approach to the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound, which were both part of the British Columbia fur trade. The Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) built a station called “Hades Gate” on the American side of the strait in 1844 to support the increased maritime traffic.
In 1846, the Oregon Treaty established the 49th parallel as the border between the United States and British North America from the Rocky Mountains to the Strait of Georgia. As a result, Point Roberts became part of the United States.
In 1848, the HBC moved its operations to Fort Victoria on Vancouver Island, and Hades Gate was abandoned.
In 1868, the United States and Britain signed the Treaty of Washington, which resulted in thetransfer of Hades Gate Island (now called Port Discovery) to American territory.
In 1890, the United States Army built a fort called Fort Stevens at the southern tip of Point Roberts to defend the entrance to Puget Sound. The fort was active until after World War II.
In 1956, the United States and Canada signed the Permanent Court of Arbitration which delimited the maritime boundary between the two countries. As a result of this treaty, strawberry Island, which is located in Boundary Bay between Point Roberts and Tsawwassen, became part of Canada.
In 1958, the ferry service between Point Roberts and Tsawwassen began.
In 1970, the community of Point Roberts was incorporated as a town.
In 1979, the United States and Canada signed the second Treaty of Joint Administration of the International boundary which resulted in the creation of the Commission for the Joint Administration of the Boundary Waters.
In 1984, Point Roberts was designated as a censusdesignated place by the United States Census Bureau.
In 1990, the United States and Canada sign the Treaty on Environmental Cooperation which establishes the International Joint Commission to resolve boundary water issues.
In 1998, the United States and Canada sign the bilateral Ship Source Oil Pollution Agreement which gives the Coast Guard authority to take necessary measures to protect the marine environment from oil pollution originating from ships.
In 2000, the Point Roberts Park and Recreation District was created by the Whatcom County Council.
In 2001, the CanadaUnited States Border Crossing Facilities Agreement is signed which authorizes the construction of a new border crossing facility at Point Roberts.
In 2003, the Point Roberts Economic Development Strategy is released which outlines a plan for the sustainable economic development of the community.
In 2006, the Point Roberts Volunteer firefighters Association is formed.
In 2007, the community of Point Roberts celebrates its 50th anniversary of incorporation.
In 2008, the Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce is formed.
In 2010, the population of Point Roberts is 1,314.
