Plymouth is located in the center of the county, at the junction of U.S. Route 30 and Indiana State Road 17. The city has a population of 10,033, as of the 2010 census.
The area around Plymouth was first settled in 1832 by a man named John Polk. Plymouth was originally known as Polktown. The town was renamed Plymouth in 1834, when it was platted. The name Plymouth was chosen because it was the name of the hometown of some of the early settlers.
Plymouth was incorporated as a town in 1836. The first mayor of Plymouth was Henry Solid. In 1837, Plymouth became the county seat of Marshall County, when the county was created.
Plymouth grew rapidly in the 1840s, due to the construction of the Michigan Road, which ran through the town. Plymouth became a city in 1865.
