Situated on the eastern bank of the Missouri River, Plattsmouth is a city in Cass County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 7,595 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cass County.
The city was founded in 1854 when the land that would become Plattsmouth was auctioned off by the U.S. government. The city was originally named Lancaster, but was renamed Plattsmouth in 1855. The name change was made at the request of postmaster George Miller, who had recently moved to the area from Plattsmouth, Massachusetts.
The Plattsmouth Bridge, built in 1868, was the first bridge to cross the Missouri River between Council Bluffs, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska. The bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1871 and was rebuilt in 1872.
The Union Pacific Railroad reached Plattsmouth in 1866, making it a major shipping point for grain, livestock, and other products.

History of Plattsmouth
Plattsmouth is a city in Cass County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 7,595 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cass County. The city is part of the OmahaCouncil Bluffs metropolitan area.
Plattsmouth was established in 1854 on the Platte River by a group of pioneers from Hannibal, Missouri. The community was named after Colonel William Platts, one of the original settlers. Colonel Platts served in the MexicanAmerican War and was later elected to the Nebraska Territorial Legislature.
The city grew rapidly during the early years, and by 1858 it had a population of over 1,000. It was incorporated as a city in 1859.
The American Civil War began in 1861, and Plattsmouth was strongly proUnion. It was an important supply point for Union troops, and the city was guarded by a detachment of the Union Army.
In October 1862, Confederate General James E. Hodge led a raid into Plattsmouth in an attempt to destroy the Union supply depot. The raid was unsuccessful, and the Confederates were forced to retreat.
After the war, Plattsmouth continued to grow and prosper. The city became an important railroad center, and several manufacturing companies were established.
The city’s population peaked at over 8,000 in 1960. Since then, it has declined slightly, but remains a vibrant community.
