History of Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh is a city located in the northern part of New York State. The city has a population of just over 19,000 people and is the county seat of Clinton County. The Plattsburgh Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Clinton County and has a population of about 82,000 people. The city is situated on the western shore of Lake Champlain and is about 100 miles north of Albany, the state capital.

Plattsburgh was first settled in 1785 by Zephaniah Platt, an American Revolutionary War veteran from Vermont. Platt originally named the settlement after himself, but the name was later changed to Plattsburgh in 1815. The city was officially incorporated in 1817.

During the War of 1812, the Battle of Plattsburgh was fought in the city in 1814. This battle was a major victory for the Americans and helped to ensure that the northern border between the United States and Canada remained intact.
