The City of Plains is located in west central Georgia approximately 100 miles southwest of Atlanta and 50 miles northwest of Columbus. Plains is adjacent to the cities of Americus and Sumter.
Plains was founded in 1873 as a small railroad town and was incorporated as a city in 1920. The city’s name is derived from the fact that it is located on the Flint Riverplain.
The Jimmy Carter National Historic Site, which includes the former President’s boyhood farm and several other buildings associated with him, is located in Plains. The site is operated by the National Park Service and is open to the public.
The Plains Mural is a large outdoor mural depicting the history of the city and its most famous resident, Jimmy Carter. The mural was painted by local artist Lila Pigford in 1993 and is located on the side of a building on Main Street.

The city of Plains was founded in 1882 as a stop on the Pecos Valley Railroad. The first post office in the city was established in 1883. Plains quickly became a center for ranching and farming in the region. In 1900, the population of the city was reported as being 1,206.
