History of Pinehurst
Pinehurst is a village in Moore County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 13,124. It is home to multiple golf courses including the historic Pinehurst Resort.
Early history
The first recorded settlers in Pinehurst were James and Catherine McDonald. They moved here from Philadelphia in 1799 and built a log cabin. The area was originally part of Campbellton, which was eventually renamed Carthage.
In 1810, two brothers from Scotland, John and Donald Ross, settled in the area and started a farm. John Ross later became a successful merchant and married Donald’s daughter, Margaret. The couple had 10 children, including a son named Donald, who would go on to become one of the most famous golf course architects in history.
The Rosses built a large house on their property in 1817, which is now known as the Carl Sandburg House and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1835, John Ross donated land for the construction of a courthouse in Carthage. This act resulted in the Moore County seat being moved from Cameron to Carthage, which increased the importance of the Ross family and their property.
The village of Pinehurst
In 1895, Frederick Law Olmsted, the famous landscape architect who designed Central Park in New York City, was hired to design a new health resort in the area. The resort was to be built around several natural mineral springs, which were thought to have medicinal properties.
Olmsted’s design called for a village center with a large green, which would be surrounded by hotels, cottages, and other buildings. This central green would be the centerpiece of the resort and the Village of Pinehurst was born.
The first hotel built in the village was the Carolina Hotel, which opened its doors in 1901. This was followed by the Holly Inn in 1902 and the Manor Inn in 1903.
The Pinehurst Resort
The Pinehurst Resort is a worldrenowned golf resort located in the Village of Pinehurst. The resort is home to eight different golf courses, including the famed No. 2 Course, which has hosted numerous championships, including the U.S. Open (both men’s and women’s), the PGA Championship, and the Ryder Cup.
The resort was originally founded by James Walker Tufts, who purchased 5,000 acres (20 km2) of land in 1895 and began to build a summer retreat. The first course at the resort, now known as the Cradle, opened in 1897.
In 1900, Donald Ross was hired to design four additional courses, which were promptly built. Ross would go on to design a total of six courses at the resort over the next 20 years.
The first professional tournament held at the resort was the North and South Open in 1904. This event was won by Walter Travis, who became the first nonBriton to win a major golf tournament.
The resort continued to grow in popularity and soon became known as the “cradle of American golf.” In 1919, the resort was purchased by Richard Tufts, the son of the original owner.
Under Tufts’ ownership, the resort underwent a major expansion, with the construction of new hotels, cottages, and golf courses. In 1925, the first women’s golf tournament was held at the resort and was won by Glenna Collett Vare.
The Great Depression and World War II caused a decline in the number of visitors to the resort, but it quickly regained its prominence after the war. In 1951, Sam Snead won the first of his three PGA Championships at the resort and in 1971, Arnold Palmer won the U.S. Open at the No. 2 Course.
The resort has continued to host major championships and is currently home to the PGA Tour’s annual Wells Fargo Championship.
