The city of Philadelphia, Mississippi is located in the central part of the state in Neshoba County. It is the county seat of Neshoba County. The city was founded in 1856 and was named after the city of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. The first settlers of the city were from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The city was incorporated in 1858.
The city is best known for being the site of the murders of three civil rights workers in 1964. The civil rights workers were James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. They were working on a voter registration campaign in the city when they were arrested by local police on trumpedup charges. They were released from jail and then ambushed and murdered by a group of white men.
This event made national headlines and helped to spur the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The city is also home to the annual Philadelphia Int’l Bluegrass Music Festival.
As of the 2010 census, the population of Philadelphia was 7,477. The racial makeup of the city was 63.7% African American, 33.5% white, 0.3% Native American, 0.9% Asian, and 0.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4% of the population.
