History of Peterborough

In the early 1600s, a group of Puritans from Massachusetts established a colony called Nantucket on the site of presentday Peterborough. The town was named after Peter Company, an early investor in the colony.

The Puritans experienced difficulties with the local Native American tribes, and in 1637 they abandoned the colony. The Native Americans then burned the town to the ground.

In 1640, a new group of settlers from Massachusetts arrived and rebuilt the town. This time, they fortified the town against attack. The town flourished for a time, but in 1675 it was attacked and burned by the Native Americans during King Philip’s War.

After the war, the town was rebuilt and continued to prosper. In 1737, it was officially incorporated as a town.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Peterborough remained a small but thriving town. Businesses included small industries, farms, and sawmills.

In the early 20th century, the arrival of the Boston & Maine Railroad brought new economic opportunities to the town. Manufacturing and tourism became major industries.

Today, Peterborough is a small but vibrant town with a rich history. It is home to a variety of businesses and cultural attractions. The town is renowned for its scenic beauty and is a popular tourist destination.
