History of Perth Amboy
Perth Amboy is a city in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The City of Perth Amboy is the county seat of Middlesex County. As of the 2010 United States Census, Perth Amboy’s population was 50,814, reflecting an increase of368 (+0.7%) from the 50,446 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 3,337 (6.1%) from the 53,783 counted in the 1990 Census. Perth Amboy has been settings of some scenes from NBC’s The Blacklist, Boardwalk Empire and the movies The Indian Runner, Trading Mom and others.
What is now Perth Amboy was first settled in 1651, as a Dutch trading post under the name “Swamp,” (Vriessendael) on account of the marshy land which surrounded it. Perth Amboy soon became known as “New Amsterdam,” and later as “Swanendael,” before finally being named Perth Amboy in 1684. Swanendael, home of the first European Settlement in New Jersey, was destroyed in 1632 during Kieft’s War, also known as the Peach Tree War. Perth Amboy was chartered as a city on April 8, 1718.
During the American Revolutionary War, Perth Amboy was the capital of New Jersey for four months, from November 26, 1776 until hosted the Continental Congress on June 25, 1783 at the old City Hall and Court House. Perth Amboy served as the political capital of the United States twice, on August 26–27, 1776, and October 29, 1783. Congress met each time at the Old Barracks in Perth Amboy. The Second Congress was shortest on record, barely three months.
After the destruction of Perth Amboy during the American Revolutionary War, Alexander Hamilton helped to rebuild the city and its economy. He promoted the natural resources of Perth Amboy, especially the healing springs, which later became famous as a spa. He also organized the city’s street grid. Alexander Hamilton also established Perth Amboy as a resort community for wealthy New Yorkers by building large summer homes, known as “shesheds” on the waterfront, including his own Hamilton House. This development greatly improved the city’s infrastructure and eventually helped Perth Amboy become an industrial center in the late 19th century.
In 1782, Perth Amboy was the site of the last executions carried out in New York State. Four pirates were hanged for piracy on Piezance Island in the harbor.
During the 19th century, several notable buildings were erected in Perth Amboy, including the City Hall and Court House (1837), St. Mary’s Church (1838), and the Barclay House (1851), which is now the Proprietary House Museum. In 1845, Perth Amboy became the county seat of Middlesex County after the county was divided from Somerset County.
On March 27, 1861, Abraham Lincoln visited Perth Amboy while en route to his inauguration. He also delivered a speech to a large crowd on the steps of the City Hall and Court House.
In the early 20th century, Perth Amboy was one of several sites considered as a possible location for the aborted 1916 Summer Olympics.
Perth Amboy was designated as the Port of Embarkation for troops departing for World War I, and again during World War II. Over three million soldiers and sailors passed through Perth Amboy during those wars.
During World War II, a 6,000bed hospital, Camp Kilmer, was established in nearby Piscataway Township to treat wounded soldiers returning from the war.
In 1968, Perth Amboy was the site of riots following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. On September 10, 1969, Perth Amboy became the target of an oil spill when 227,000 gallons of oil spilled into Raritan Bay after two tankers collided in Ambrose Channel, just off the coast of the city.
Since the 1950s, Perth Amboy has been experiencing urban decline as jobs have moved from the city to the suburbs; in addition, many of the city’s older homes have been demolished to make way for newer housing developments and highways. Despite these challenges, Perth Amboy has been experiencing a renaissance, with new housing and businesses moving into the city, particularly in the downtown area.
