History of Payson

Payson is a city located in Utah County, Utah, United States. It is part of the ProvoOrem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 20,011 at the 2010 census.

Payson was first settled in 1850 as Springfield. The name was changed to Payson in 1853. It was named after James Pace, who was an early settler and leader in the community.

Payson was originally settled by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints (LDS Church). However, due to the proximity of the settlement to Nauvoo, Illinois, which was also settled by Latterday Saints, many of Payson’s early settlers were Mormons who had been expelled from Nauvoo.

Payson is the birthplace of James E. Faust, who served as a member of the First Presidency of the LDS Church from 1995 until his death in 2007.

Payson is home to the annual Fredette Family 4th of July Celebration, which is the largest fireworks display in Utah County.
