History of Pawhuska
Pawhuska is a city in and the county seat of Osage County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,589 at the 2010 census, a decline of 1.2 percent from 3,629 at the 2000 census. It is notable as the primary setting of the NBC television series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and is the capital of the federally recognized Osage Nation.
Pawhuska was established in 1872 as the county seat of the newly organized Osage County, Oklahoma. The city was named after the last chief of the Osage Tribe, PawHiuSkah, which loosely translates to “White Hair” in English. Pawhuska is home to the Osage Nation Museum, which chronicles the history and culture of the Osage people. The city is also home to the Pioneer Woman Museum, which is dedicated to the history of pioneer women in the American West.
Pawhuska is located in the heart of Osage County, just south of the town of Hominy. It is about 30 miles northwest of Tulsa and about 60 miles northeast of Oklahoma City.
