History of Pass Christian

The city of Pass Christian is located in the southernmost tip of Mississippi, on the Gulf of Mexico. It isnamed after the nearby Pass Christian Isles, which were named by French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville in 1699. The city was founded in 1848 as a seaport town, and grew rapidly due to the cotton trade. The city was also a popular summer resort for wealthy southerners.

The Civil War and Reconstruction took a toll on the city, but it recovered quickly and was soon a thriving community again. The city’s economy was hit hard by the Great Depression, but once again rebounded in the following years. The city was devastated by Hurricane Camille in 1969, but has since been rebuilt.
